At St. Oswald’s CE Primary School, Design and Technology (DT) is hands-on, creative, and purposeful. Pupils learn to design and make products that solve real-world problems. Through the iterative process — design, make, evaluate — children think critically, work collaboratively, and grow in confidence.
The Iterative Process: Design, Make, Evaluate
In every DT project, pupils follow the iterative process. First, they explore ideas and research solutions. Next, they design and make their products using a range of materials and tools. Finally, they test and evaluate their work to see what went well and what could improve.
This cycle builds resilience and problem-solving skills. It helps pupils understand that good design takes practice, reflection, and persistence.
Cooking and Nutrition
Cooking and Nutrition is a key part of DT at St. Oswald’s. Pupils learn where food comes from and how to prepare it safely. They explore the principles of a healthy, balanced diet and gain essential cooking skills.
In Key Stage 1, pupils start with simple recipes like fruit salads and healthy snacks. By Key Stage 2, they plan and cook complete dishes. Each lesson helps children build confidence, independence, and a love of good food.
Cooking is practical, fun, and valuable — and it’s often a highlight for pupils and parents alike.
Cross-Curricular Links
DT connects naturally with other subjects. Pupils use their artistic skills when sketching, decorating, and presenting their designs — visit our Art page to see these skills in action.

In addition, DT links closely with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Pupils apply creative thinking, test materials, and explore how things work. These links help them see how learning connects across subjects and how design shapes the world around us.
Preparing for the Future
Through DT, pupils gain the confidence to take creative risks and see themselves as designers, engineers, and makers. They learn to plan carefully, test ideas, and improve their work.
