Following an inspection on January 9, 2020, St. Oswald’s CE Aided Primary School has maintained its status as a “good” school. The report highlights a nurturing environment where the school’s Christian ethos is evident in all activities, guided by the motto “Hand in hand, we love, laugh and learn”.

Key Strengths:

  • Safety and Well-being: Pupils feel safe and enjoy attending, reporting that bullying is rare and handled effectively by staff.
  • Curriculum Success: Leaders have successfully revitalised the curriculum, which is described as ambitious and particularly strong in English, mathematics, science, and art.
  • Reading and Mathematics: Reading is highly valued, with effective phonics teaching in early years leading to strong performance in reading and mathematics by the end of Key Stages 1 and 2.
  • Inclusion: The school successfully meets the needs of pupils with SEND and those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Areas for Improvement

  • Phonics Organisation: Leaders are encouraged to refine Year 1 phonics teaching to ensure every pupil receives instruction tailored to their specific level.
  • Foundation Subjects: While leadership is good, further development is needed in subjects like history, geography, and modern foreign languages to match the high standards of core subjects.

Overall, the school is praised for its dedicated leadership, supportive governors, and knowledgeable staff who inspire pupils to achieve their best.
