At St Oswald’s, we are proud of our close relationship with our beautiful and historic church, St Oswald’s Church in Backford.
In July 2024, we were delighted to welcome Reverend Elaine into our church and school community. Reverend Elaine and Mrs Beesley work closely together to maintain and strengthen the strong links between school and church life.
Although the church is a little too far to walk safely due to busy roads, we travel by bus when visiting. Each year, we attend a special Christmas Worship at the end of the autumn term, and once a year, each class has the opportunity to lead a Sunday Worship at the church.
Reverend Elaine also leads worship in school once every half term—either in person or virtually through her engaging Pixel Priest platform.
Our Church Community
St. Oswald’s Church in Backford has a rich and historic presence within the local community.
Dating back to the 13th century, the church’s chancel originates from the 14th century, with the tower added in the 15th century. The nave was rebuilt in 1728–31 and later remodelled in 1877–79 by architect Ewan Christian. Built from local sandstone with a slate roof, the church features notable Gothic architecture, including a Perpendicular-style tower with crocketted finials and decorative gargoyles.
Inside, St. Oswald’s Church houses significant historic treasures such as a chained Bible from 1617 and painted memorial boards by the Randle Holme family. In recognition of its architectural and historical importance, the church was designated a Grade II* listed building in 1967.
